Does using AI make us better?

Does using AI make one better?

Or does using AI make one worse?

I think this pair of questions

Are the leading philosophical questions

We face today

On one hand,

A person who can accomplish by themselves and their tools

A task that another person requires the extra help of AI

Is a person who is more capable

Yet,

If one views AI as a tool

Then the the second person can be viewed as using the best tool available

And that the first person is effectively no more capable

How straightforward is it to compare

The value of AI as ‘the best tool’

Compared to other tools?

To that I ask you

How is the person who uses AI to improve their lives

Instead of relying on human effort

Different from the following people?

A farmer who uses a tractor to harvest their crops

Instead of their two hands

A person who drives a car to get to work

Instead of walking the whole way

A software engineer who adapts code to make a program

Instead of writing a program from textbook principles

A bodybuilder who uses steroids to bulk up

Instead of working out more often

An artist who imitates another’s style

Instead of finding their own

A bully who gets the nerd to do their homework

Instead of doing it themself

How would adding the following change your answer ?

The size of each task

The timeframe of each task

The learning that each task demands

The suffering that each task demands

The personal ability of each person

The personal history of each person

Now, I pose the question again

Does AI make us better or worse?

I think no single correct answer

Follow from these trains of thought

But I still believe in the power

Of human learning, interaction and decisions

For if we surrender these human tasks to AI

We surrender on our very selves
